Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is once again drawing sharp criticism after offering a highly controversial take on the American Revolution that many historians and lawmakers say twists the founding of the United States into a modern political talking point.
During a recent appearance at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, the New York Democrat claimed, “The American Revolution was against the billionaires of their time,” attempting to frame the 18th-century fight for independence through the lens of today’s debates over wealth inequality and capitalism.
She continued the same theme, adding, “And [now] we are declaring independence from such an extreme marriage of wealth and power and the state that the voices of everyday people did not exist,” suggesting a direct parallel between colonial grievances and modern progressive economic arguments.
The remarks immediately sparked backlash online and among conservative lawmakers, who say the comparison is not only misleading but historically inaccurate.
