Virginia Democrats are learning the hard way that political swagger can age badly when the courts get involved.
What was supposed to be a triumphant moment for the party has now turned into a humiliating setback after the Virginia Supreme Court torched a controversial redistricting referendum that Democrats had aggressively pushed as a pathway to dominating the state’s congressional map ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Now, one Democrat’s viral bragging is coming back to haunt her.
State Sen. L. Louise Lucas is suddenly facing renewed scrutiny after old celebratory posts about the proposed congressional maps resurfaced online following the court’s bombshell ruling. Critics are using the posts as proof that Democrats were never truly interested in “fair representation” and instead saw the redraw effort as a blunt-force political weapon designed to cement power.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the referendum process violated the state constitution, effectively nullifying last month’s results and halting the Democrats’ attempt to radically reshape the state’s congressional districts.
