The decision instantly detonated one of the biggest Democratic election strategies in the state.
And it left Lucas’ now-infamous slogan looking painfully premature.
In one social media post that is rapidly circulating again online, Lucas openly celebrated the maps while promoting fundraising merchandise tied to the proposed congressional advantage Democrats believed they were about to secure.
“We have now had over 100 “Ten F***in’ One” shirts ordered and raised over $5k to help defend our Virginia Senate Democratic majority that delivered these maps! Thank you! Tweet our slogan tonight and tag me if you would like me to follow back!”
The phrase was a direct reference to projections floated by supporters of the redraw plan, who claimed the new map could potentially deliver Democrats a staggering 10-1 advantage in Virginia’s congressional delegation.
That projection immediately became a rallying cry for Republicans, who blasted the referendum as an unapologetic partisan gerrymander disguised as “reform.”
Now, after the court ruling, conservatives say Democrats essentially exposed their own intentions.
Republicans argued throughout the legal fight that the referendum was rushed through improperly and violated constitutional procedures governing amendments in Virginia. Under state law, constitutional amendments must pass during two separate legislative sessions with a House election occurring between them.
The challenge centered on timing.
Republicans argued Democrats improperly moved forward after early voting had already begun, making the process unconstitutional. Democrats attempted to argue that the official “election” only referred to Election Day itself and not the early voting period leading up to it.
The court wasn’t buying it.
In a major defeat for Democrats, the Virginia Supreme Court sided with the challengers and invalidated the referendum entirely, bringing the redraw effort to a screeching halt.
The ruling not only wipes away the proposed maps, but also raises serious questions about the massive amount of money poured into the battle.
Virginia reportedly spent more than $5 million conducting the special election surrounding the referendum, while outside political organizations allegedly dumped close to $100 million into advertising, organizing, and campaigning tied to the effort.
Now critics are demanding answers.
Why was there such urgency to push the referendum through while legal questions still hung over the process? Why were Democratic leaders already celebrating with merchandise and victory slogans before the courts had even ruled?
Those questions are becoming harder to ignore.
For conservatives, Lucas’ viral “Ten F***in’ One” message has become symbolic of what they view as the Democratic Party’s real goal: total political domination rather than neutral redistricting reform.
And the timing could not be worse for Virginia Democrats.
The ruling arrives amid growing national scrutiny over redistricting fights across the country as both parties battle for control of the U.S. House. Democrats have frequently accused Republicans of weaponizing district maps for political gain, but this case is now giving Republicans fresh ammunition to argue Democrats are guilty of the exact same behavior.
The court’s decision also carries historical echoes.
Virginia courts have invalidated referendum results before when constitutional procedures were not followed correctly. Legal observers quickly pointed to a 1958 ruling involving Arlington County, where the Virginia Supreme Court struck down the outcome of a local referendum after determining voters had approved an unconstitutional measure.
Still, the political fallout from this latest case is likely to linger.
Some Democrats are already floating the possibility of further legal appeals, and Virginia election disputes have previously landed before the U.S. Supreme Court.
But regardless of what happens next, the damage to the party’s messaging may already be done.
What Democrats hoped would look like confidence now looks, to many critics, like arrogance.
And the viral slogan that was once supposed to symbolize victory is now being waved around by opponents as evidence that the entire effort was less about fairness and more about power.
For Lucas and her allies, the celebration ended abruptly.
The court made sure of that.
