The political battlefield in Virginia just shifted in a massive way, and Democrats are now scrambling after the state’s highest court delivered a devastating blow to their redistricting ambitions ahead of the midterm elections.
In a ruling that could ripple far beyond Virginia’s borders, the Virginia Supreme Court struck down a congressional redistricting referendum that Democrats hoped would dramatically reshape the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. The court’s decision halted a plan that critics argued was nothing more than a blatant partisan power grab disguised as “fair maps.”
The rejected proposal had the potential to transform Virginia’s current 6-5 congressional split into a crushing 10-1 advantage for Democrats, handing the Left a major boost in its quest to seize control of Congress.
Instead, Republicans walked away with a major courtroom victory.
The ruling came just days after the U.S. Supreme Court delivered another major setback to race-based districting efforts nationwide, declaring that maps drawn primarily around racial considerations violate constitutional principles.
