A moment inside the U.S. Capitol this week is igniting backlash and fueling a fresh round of political debate, after critics pointed to what they see as a glaring contradiction in the messaging of prominent Democrats.
At the center of the controversy is Ilhan Omar, who just weeks ago stood before a large crowd in Minnesota warning about authoritarian leadership in America. During that earlier appearance, she joined voices accusing former President Donald Trump of behaving like a monarch.
Fast forward to this week, and the optics could not have been more different.
When King Charles III addressed a joint session of Congress, many Democratic lawmakers gave the visiting royal a warm reception. Applause filled the chamber. Smiles were visible across the aisle. Phones came out to capture the historic moment.
Among those seen reacting enthusiastically was Omar herself.
