Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is sounding the alarm over the state’s newly approved congressional map, predicting that the Supreme Court of Virginia will likely strike it down. His remarks come as the political and legal battle intensifies following a lower court decision that halted certification of the referendum results.
The controversial measure, narrowly approved by voters, would dramatically reshape Virginia’s congressional districts. Under the proposed map, Democrats would hold a strong advantage in 10 out of the state’s 11 districts. That shift alone has turned the issue into a national flashpoint as control of the U.S. House hangs in the balance.
But the fight didn’t take long to move into the courts.
Just one day after the vote, a judge in Tazewell County intervened, blocking the results from taking effect. The ruling cited several concerns, most notably the way the ballot language was presented to voters. The judge went as far as to call it “flagrantly misleading,” raising serious questions about whether voters were given a fair and accurate understanding of what they were approving.
