Swalwell Steps Down — Now It’s His Friend’s Turn

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

At the time, that show of support aligned with a broader effort among some Democrats to downplay the accusations as speculation. But the narrative shifted dramatically once more concrete reporting emerged. After the San Francisco Chronicle published claims that Swalwell had sexually assaulted a former staffer while intoxicated, Gallego abruptly reversed his stance and withdrew his endorsement.

“I regret having come to his defense on social media prior to knowing all the information. I am equally as shocked and upset about what has transpired,” Gallego said.

The sudden pivot has only intensified scrutiny on Gallego, who is widely viewed as an ambitious figure within the Democratic Party and has even been floated as a potential contender for the White House in 2028. Critics are now questioning whether his initial defense was premature—or whether it reflected deeper knowledge of the situation.

The relationship between the two lawmakers has been both politically and personally intertwined for years. Gallego played a prominent role in Swalwell’s 2020 presidential campaign, serving as chairman, and the pair frequently appeared together at political events. Their bond extended beyond politics, with Swalwell attending Gallego’s wedding in Puerto Rico in 2021. The two also previously faced backlash over an $85,000 trip to Doha, Qatar, where photos of them riding camels shirtless drew criticism and fueled questions about judgment.

Financial connections between the two have also resurfaced under renewed examination. Reports indicate that Gallego spent approximately $13,000 in campaign funds on FindRaiser, an artificial intelligence startup linked to Swalwell. The transaction has sparked concerns over potential conflicts of interest, particularly given Swalwell’s outreach to fellow lawmakers. Additionally, campaign finance filings show that Gallego contributed $8,000 to Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign, further highlighting the depth of their political alliance.

The controversy has ignited fierce reactions online, with critics from both sides weighing in on Gallego’s role in the unfolding drama.

“An important question everyone should be asking: what did Senator Ruben Gallego know and when did he know it?,” wrote Yashar Ali on X.

“The idea that Ruben Gallego didn’t know this was going on is ridiculous,” added Republican strategist Matt Whitlock.

Facing mounting pressure, Gallego issued a firm denial on Monday, insisting he had no prior knowledge of the allegations against his longtime associate.

“I want to be clear: I had no knowledge of the allegations of assault, harassment, and predatory behavior against Eric Swalwell. I trusted someone who I believed was a friend, but it is now clear that he is not the person I thought I knew,” Gallego said.

Even so, the fallout has extended beyond politics into Gallego’s personal life. Past reports have resurfaced detailing his divorce, including claims that he served papers to his pregnant ex-wife before later entering a relationship with his current spouse, Sydney Barron, who was 25 when they met. These revelations, combined with his close ties to Swalwell, have added further fuel to the growing controversy.

For his part, Swalwell has categorically denied the allegations, maintaining that they are “false.” But with his resignation imminent and questions continuing to mount, the political damage appears far from contained. What began as a scandal tied to one lawmaker has now evolved into a broader test of accountability—one that could have lasting implications for multiple figures within the Democratic Party.
