The Iranian regime is once again showing the world exactly how it negotiates — by issuing ultimatums at the last possible moment. Just as critical peace discussions with the United States were about to begin, Tehran abruptly introduced new conditions that threaten to collapse the entire effort before a single word is exchanged.
Instead of signaling goodwill, Iran chose escalation.
With high-level negotiations scheduled in Islamabad, the regime stunned observers by insisting that key demands must be met in advance. Among them: access to billions in frozen funds and a complete ceasefire involving Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. The timing could not be more disruptive, coming mere hours before diplomats were expected to sit down at the table.
At the center of the controversy is Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who delivered the regime’s position publicly. His statement made clear that Tehran has no intention of proceeding unless its preconditions are satisfied.
“Two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets prior to the commencement of negotiations. These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin.”
