Albertsons Shutdown Wave Sparks Panic

Hundreds of grocery workers across the country are suddenly out of a job, and one of America’s largest supermarket chains is pulling back fast.

Albertsons, the parent company behind brands like Safeway and Vons, is shutting down multiple locations in California, Texas, and Washington, D.C. The closures follow the collapse of its proposed merger with Kroger, a deal that was supposed to help the company compete in an increasingly consolidated grocery market.

Now, workers are paying the price.

Stores Closing, Workers Cut Loose

The shutdowns are hitting several states at once, with dozens of communities losing access to familiar grocery stores.

In Southern California alone, two Vons locations are set to close in April, wiping out more than a hundred jobs. Another Albertsons location near Riverside already shut its doors, while a Safeway store in Northern California closed earlier this year.
