Former President Donald Trump is once again rattling the transatlantic alliance, suggesting the United States could walk away from NATO entirely as the Iran crisis escalates.
In a blunt interview with The Telegraph, Trump did not hold back when asked if leaving NATO was on the table.
“Oh yes, I would say (it’s) beyond reconsideration… I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and (Russian President Vladimir) Putin knows that too, by the way.”
The timing of Trump’s remarks comes as NATO partners hesitate to send military support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil chokepoint Iran effectively closed after U.S. and Israeli operations.
Trump has been publicly scolding allies for days, criticizing what he views as their weak response. On Tuesday, he called out nations scrambling for fuel, urging them to take responsibility.
