Christian Leaders Declare War on “Nationalism”?

A coalition of progressive evangelical leaders has released a new open letter sharply criticizing the administration of Donald Trump, accusing it of fostering what they describe as a dangerous rise in “white Christian nationalism.”

The statement, signed by hundreds of clergy members and religious activists, represents the latest example of a growing divide within American Christianity over politics, culture, and the role of faith in public life. While many conservative Christians have strongly supported Trump’s leadership and policies, this group of progressive religious leaders argues that the current political climate poses a threat both to democracy and to the integrity of the Christian faith itself.

The phrase has become a lightning rod in the broader culture war, with critics claiming it reflects an attempt to fuse Christianity with American nationalism. Meanwhile, conservatives have often dismissed the accusation as a smear designed to silence traditional Christian views on issues like religious liberty, abortion, and national identity.

The new letter echoes those criticisms and directs them squarely at Trump’s second-term agenda.
