Critics are now highlighting remarks the Democrat made several years ago during a legislative hearing—comments that are quickly becoming a flashpoint in the next phase of the Senate race.
The controversy comes on the heels of Talarico’s recent primary win over fellow Democrat Jasmine Crockett, a victory that was celebrated by many within the party. However, Republicans wasted little time digging up old footage from his time in the Texas Legislature, and one particular exchange from 2021 is now circulating widely across social media and political circles.
The clip stems from a hearing before the Texas House Public Education Committee, where lawmakers were debating legislation concerning transgender athletes competing in girls’ K–12 sports. During the discussion, Talarico challenged the premise behind the proposed bill, which was introduced by Republican state Rep. Cole Hefner.
At one point in the hearing, Talarico directly addressed Hefner and questioned the bill’s assumptions about biological sex.
