California Just Let 4,500 Illegal Aliens Go

Federal immigration authorities are sounding the alarm after revealing that California has released thousands of illegal aliens into local communities instead of turning them over to federal custody since President Donald Trump returned to office. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the state’s sanctuary policies have repeatedly blocked federal agents from taking custody of criminal offenders who should have been transferred for removal proceedings.

ICE officials report that between January 20, 2025, and the end of last week, California law enforcement agencies refused to honor immigration detainers for 4,561 illegal aliens. These detainers would have allowed federal agents to assume custody directly from state or local jails. Instead, due to California’s sanctuary state law, those individuals were released back onto the streets, forcing ICE to track them down later in the community.

Federal officials stress that many of the released individuals were not minor offenders. ICE confirmed that a significant number had prior arrests or convictions for serious and violent crimes, including murder, sexual abuse of children, domestic violence, and gang-related offenses.

One of the most alarming cases involved Carmelo Corado Hurtado, an illegal alien from Guatemala with a criminal history that includes a conviction for first-degree murder, along with drunk driving and second-degree robbery. ICE stated that a detainer was properly filed, but California officials declined to comply. Hurtado was released from custody and later located and arrested by federal agents in the community before being deported from the United States.
