If Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) harbors ambitions of launching another White House bid in 2028, newly leaked audio suggests he may be doing so while burning bridges with the very voters and leaders he would need most. Recordings obtained by Axios and leaked by a GOP source reveal Cruz privately unloading on President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance during a closed-door conversation with donors—remarks that are now reverberating across the conservative movement.
The recordings, made during the first half of 2025, capture roughly ten minutes of Cruz speaking candidly to financial backers. What emerges is a portrait of a senator openly critical of the Trump administration’s direction and sharply dismissive of the sitting vice president—comments unlikely to sit well with a Republican base still firmly aligned with MAGA priorities.
According to Axios, Cruz portrayed Vice President Vance not as an independent political force, but as an extension of conservative commentator Tucker Carlson. Cruz and Carlson have a long and bitter history, with Cruz previously attacking Carlson as anti-Semitic and un-American. In the leaked audio, Cruz leaves little doubt about his disdain.
