The Golden Globes thought they were making history when they announced a brand-new Best Podcast category. Instead, they exposed just how disconnected Hollywood’s award class has become from reality.
The backlash erupted almost immediately. And it only got worse when Bill Maher stepped in and said what many Americans have been thinking for years.
The Golden Globes officially rolled out their inaugural Best Podcast nominations late last year, boasting that the new category would honor “the extraordinary and diverse talents in podcasting.” What followed, however, was anything but diverse.
Six podcasts were selected as finalists. Amy Poehler’s Good Hang. Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert. Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy. The Mel Robbins Podcast. SmartLess. And NPR’s Up First.
One name was conspicuously missing.
The most successful podcast on the planet.
Despite dominating Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube throughout 2025, The Joe Rogan Experience was nowhere to be found. Rogan has topped Spotify’s charts for six consecutive years and routinely draws millions of listeners per episode.
