Winter storms punish American highways every year, but what unfolded on a stretch of Interstate 196 in western Michigan could have ended far worse than it did.
Instead of a mass casualty event, more than 100 drivers walked away alive after a terrifying chain reaction crash that turned a busy roadway into a frozen scrapyard. Newly released drone footage shows the scale of the destruction and how close the situation came to becoming a true tragedy.
Whiteout Turns I-196 Into a War Zone
Monday morning began like any other winter commute for drivers traveling between Zeeland and Hudsonville. That changed rapidly around 10:19 a.m. when lake effect snow collided with powerful winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour.
The combination erased visibility in seconds.
According to authorities, drivers suddenly found themselves unable to see more than a quarter mile ahead as snow blasted across the pavement. Within moments, vehicles began slamming into one another as braking became nearly impossible.
