Court Blocks Last-Ditch Effort to Halt ICE

A federal judge on Wednesday declined to immediately intervene in a growing legal fight between Minnesota officials and the Biden administration over aggressive immigration enforcement operations unfolding across the state. The decision allows federal agents to continue conducting enforcement actions—at least for now—despite mounting objections from state and local leaders.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez, an appointee of President Biden, said she could not issue an emergency order halting the federal operations because the legal issues presented were complex and required deeper examination. Minnesota officials had sought a temporary restraining order to stop what they described as an unprecedented surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this week by the State of Minnesota along with the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, accuses federal agents of overstepping their authority. Plaintiffs allege ICE and other federal personnel carried out warrantless arrests, used excessive force, and violated constitutional protections during enforcement sweeps conducted throughout the state.
