A routine federal immigration enforcement operation spiraled into chaos Monday in St. Cloud, Minnesota, after hundreds of Somali protesters swarmed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents responding to a targeted action at a local business. The explosive confrontation unfolded after a Somali-language media outlet broadcast the operation live, effectively mobilizing a crowd in real time.
According to multiple eyewitness accounts and video circulating online, ICE agents were conducting an enforcement action at a Somali-owned business located inside a busy strip mall. Within minutes, the scene escalated as a large crowd gathered, surrounding federal vehicles and officers as whistles blared and chants echoed across the parking lot.
“ICE out! ICE out!” the mob of Somali protestors shouted.
The crowd quickly grew to several hundred people, many positioning themselves directly in front of ICE vehicles, blocking exits and preventing agents from leaving the scene. Officers appeared boxed in as tensions rose and protesters pressed closer, some filming, others shouting, and many refusing commands to disperse.
