The political ground just shifted in Minnesota.
The Department of Justice has officially opened an investigation into Democrat Governor Tim Walz following mounting allegations that his administration either ignored or enabled one of the largest public welfare fraud scandals in U.S. history. The probe comes after President Donald Trump publicly raised the possibility of criminal liability and as federal investigators continue uncovering staggering levels of abuse across multiple state run programs.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the investigation Monday night during an appearance on Fox News with Jesse Watters. Her comments followed Walz’s sudden and highly unusual decision to suspend his re election campaign just days after a viral investigative report exposed deep fraud inside Minnesota’s childcare and welfare systems.
Governor Walz attempted to downplay the scandal by acknowledging fraud existed while accusing independent journalist Nick Shirley and the Trump administration of “exploiting” what he called “vulnerable” populations. That explanation did not sit well with the White House.
Leavitt dismissed Walz’s defense outright and framed the crisis as the direct result of failed leadership. “This is a man who can no longer even win the support of the voters within his home state because his policies have failed them. And now the great people of Minnesota, a state that was once known as the land of 10 ,000 lakes, has been turned into the land of 10 ,000 Somali schemes because of their governor,” she said.
