In a move that underscores the lingering fractures inside the Republican Party following the 2021 impeachment saga, Rep. Dan Newhouse of Washington announced this week that he will not seek re-election in 2026. Newhouse is one of the few remaining House Republicans who voted to impeach President Donald Trump after the January 6 Capitol unrest—a decision that has followed him politically ever since.
Newhouse confirmed his plans in a written statement released Wednesday, framing his departure as a personal decision rather than a political retreat. “This decision comes with no reservations or remorse, only gratitude for the tremendous opportunity to have represented my home state in Congress,” Newhouse wrote. He went on to say that he looks “forward to this new chapter and way I can continue to serve my community and this great nation,” while also thanking his family “for their steadfast love and support.”
First elected to Congress in 2014, Newhouse built a reputation as a reliable Republican vote on agriculture and regional issues important to central Washington. However, his vote to impeach Trump placed him squarely at odds with the GOP base, making him a political outlier in a party that has increasingly unified behind the former—and now sitting—president.
