A deadly shooting erupted on the campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, Saturday evening, leaving two people dead and eight others critically wounded. Authorities have confirmed that those injured are in stable condition, though the situation remains serious.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley addressed the media shortly before 7 p.m. Eastern Time, confirming the fatalities and the number of injured. “We can confirm two deaths and eight individuals who were shot and are in critical but stable condition,” Smiley said. The announcement came after reports and social media posts began circulating around 4:30 p.m., indicating a major emergency on the campus.
Providence Police Commander Tim O’Hara provided additional details, describing the suspect as a male dressed entirely in black who is still on the loose. “The suspect left the scene on foot after the shooting,” O’Hara said, adding that a weapon has not yet been recovered. Authorities are still working to determine the type of firearm involved in the attack.
