Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey attempted to stage a feel-good moment for cameras this week in an effort to counter President Donald Trump’s blistering criticism of Minnesota’s Somali community. But instead of landing a political win, Frey became the internet’s latest meme after appearing visibly uncomfortable while eating a traditional Somali dish during a filmed visit to a local restaurant.
The mayor, fresh off a tight re-election battle against a Somali challenger, has been aggressively trying to frame himself as a champion of the community. His latest attempt involved coordinating a publicized stop at a Somali establishment shortly after President Trump condemned the state’s ongoing multi-billion-dollar fraud scandals tied to several welfare programs.
Trump didn’t hold back, torching both the dysfunction and the political figures he believes helped create it. “We could go one way or the other, and we’re gonna go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country. Ilhan Omar is garbage. She’s garbage. Her friends are garbage. These aren’t people that work,” the president told reporters earlier this week. He continued, “These aren’t people that say, ‘let’s go, come on, let’s make this place great.’ These are people that do nothing but complain. They complain. And from where they came from, they got nothing. You know, they came from paradise, and they said, ‘this isn’t paradise.’ But when they come from hell, and they complain and do nothing but b**ch, we don’t want them in our country.”
