Investigators say the three brothers had been sharing the cabin when tensions escalated. Officials noted the argument reportedly involved alcohol, which may have contributed to the deadly confrontation.
“The verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation,” police said. During the altercation, Scot Thompson allegedly grabbed a rifle and fired, killing Mark and David.
According to People magazine, one of the brothers attempted to call 911 during the altercation, but by the time law enforcement arrived, both victims were already dead.
Following the shootings, Scot reportedly fled the scene in David’s vehicle. A multi-agency search involving the New York State Police, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, and the Geneseo Police Department quickly tracked down the vehicle. Scot Thompson was apprehended safely without further incident, the state police reported.
After his arrest, Scot was transported to SP Amity for processing before being moved to the Allegany County Jail ahead of his arraignment.
Authorities have scheduled autopsies for Mark and David at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester to confirm the cause of death.
It is still unknown whether the cabin belonged to one of the brothers or was a temporary rental. Investigators are actively looking into ownership and additional circumstances surrounding the incident, WKBW noted.
Family members of the victims have not issued public statements, and authorities say the broader motive for the attack remains under investigation beyond the immediate argument.
As the rural community grapples with the shocking violence, police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
This case remains active, and law enforcement officials are continuing to piece together the events that led to this tragic and senseless loss of life.
