A Florida Democrat facing a mountain of federal charges is trying to turn a sprawling financial scandal into a race-based grievance — and voters across the country are watching in disbelief.
Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL), a Biden-ally who entered Congress promising “accountability,” is now under indictment for an alleged multimillion-dollar COVID funding scam that prosecutors say fed her campaign, her lifestyle, and her tax returns. Instead of confronting the evidence, the congresswoman insists the criminal case is driven by racial animus.
Federal Prosecutors Lay Out the Scheme
A Miami grand jury hit Cherfilus-McCormick on Wednesday with a stack of felony charges: conspiracy to steal federal funds, money laundering, illegal campaign contributions, and tax fraud.
According to prosecutors, the Democrat lawmaker and her associates — including her brother — used their family-owned medical staffing company, Trinity Healthcare Staffing Services, to secure a FEMA contract during the COVID emergency. Federal officials say the group then inflated invoices and drained roughly $5 million in taxpayer funds.
