Her Response: Claim Racism, Not Corruption
Rather than address the documentation laid out by the FBI and IRS, Cherfilus-McCormick immediately framed the indictment as an attack on minorities.
“Well, it’s an unjust indictment, and it seems like these intimidation tactics have been pervasive. We spent all week seeing different members getting censured, all in hopes of intimidating and kind of distracting from the Epstein files. And I look forward to my day in court so I can prove myself and actually state the truth,” she told reporters.
She claimed Congress is targeting her because she is Black and suggested the criminal charges were part of an effort to silence minority lawmakers.
“But if this is what Congress is becoming, where they’re always trying to intimidate you, scare tactics, especially attacking minorities, black and brown people, then we’re going to have to keep fighting for the district. And everybody has been giving me so much support, and we’re going to keep fighting until the district gets what it needs, which is fair prices, housing, and fair representation of Congress.”
Democrats Quietly Shove Her Out of Leadership
Even as she protests her innocence, her own party is quietly distancing itself.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that the embattled congresswoman would step aside from her leadership position on a key House Foreign Affairs subcommittee “while the matter is ongoing.”
Her office insists she’s staying exactly where she is — and implied critics demanding her resignation have no say in the matter.
This Didn’t Come Out of Nowhere
Cherfilus-McCormick has been under scrutiny long before this indictment. A House Ethics Committee inquiry began in late 2023 after investigators flagged suspicious campaign contributions and unreported financial activity. By mid-2024, the probe expanded to include allegations of personal use of campaign funds.
Meanwhile, the federal criminal investigation was already underway. Florida emergency officials had reportedly identified troubling FEMA billing practices years earlier, triggering a deeper review by the FBI’s Miami Field Office and IRS criminal investigators.
Now, all of those threads have converged — and the result is devastating.
Decades in Prison on the Table
If convicted on all counts, the Democrat lawmaker is staring down the possibility of decades in federal prison.
But rather than confront the accusations head-on, she has chosen a familiar political strategy: shift the focus, blame the system, and portray herself as a victim.
