Police say the order came from Valeriy Zaluzhny, then Ukraine’s top military commander and now Kyiv’s ambassador to the United Kingdom. They did not mince words. One official statement reads: “It is clear that the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September 2022 were carried out by an elite Ukrainian unit under the direct orders of then-Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhny.”
Germany has now documented that it has been bankrolling a government that destroyed German infrastructure.
Poland Responds by Defending the Saboteurs
The fallout has turned Europe’s supposed unity into a public spectacle. For years, EU leaders demanded unconditional support for Ukraine and insisted its actions were beyond reproach.
Then Germany asked Poland to extradite one of the Ukrainian suspects. Warsaw flatly refused. Prime Minister Donald Tusk mocked Germany’s findings instead of cooperating. His reaction summed up the political pressure Europe is facing.
“The problem isn’t that the pipeline was blown up,” Tusk said. “The problem is that it was built.”
Polish courts went even further, calling the suspect a hero and ruling that actions against “enemy infrastructure” during a “just, defensive war” cannot be criminal. Italy soon followed Poland’s lead and rejected extradition for another Ukrainian linked to the operation.
European nations are now openly shielding the individuals who attacked Germany’s critical infrastructure. The message is clear. Protecting the Ukraine narrative matters more than justice.
The Intelligence Angle That Europe Does Not Want Discussed
The Wall Street Journal has reported competing theories involving possible CIA links to the operation. Investigative reporter Seymour Hersh claimed U.S. Navy divers planted charges under the cover of a NATO drill. Even Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at American involvement during his widely watched interview with Tucker Carlson.
One plausible scenario being discussed by analysts is a joint arrangement involving the CIA, Zaluzhny, and Ukrainian special forces. Intelligence officials in the Netherlands reportedly told the CIA months in advance that Ukraine was planning to target the pipeline. According to reports, the CIA pushed Zelensky to shut the mission down.
Yet the pipelines still blew.
Either Kyiv ignored Washington’s warnings, or Western intelligence officials were deeper in the operation than they want to admit.
Berlin Now Faces a Crisis With No Good Answers
Germany is now in a political box with no escape. Its own investigators spent years assembling evidence that Ukraine attacked German assets. Yet Berlin continues pouring billions into Ukraine’s war effort and remains its second biggest supplier of weapons after the United States.
To prosecute Ukraine would collapse Europe’s political strategy. To ignore the investigation would confirm to German citizens that their leaders care more about protecting Washington’s agenda than protecting German interests.
The scandal has already fractured European unity. Poland and Italy have openly defied Germany. Voters across Europe are watching their leaders trip over themselves to protect the people accused of blowing up a NATO country’s energy supply.
Populist parties like Alternative for Germany are guaranteed to seize on this. They will argue that the political establishment betrayed its own country. And they will not be wrong.
How does Chancellor Olaf Scholz explain to the millions of German families crushed by soaring energy prices that his government refuses to hold accountable those who destroyed their pipeline system?
He cannot.
The Nord Stream investigation has exposed more than sabotage. It has revealed the depth of Europe’s political rot. A truth that powerful governments desperately wanted hidden is now out in the open. And they are proving that in modern European politics, truth only matters when it fits the script.
