Schumer Retreats After GOP Confrontation!

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer found himself cornered on the Senate floor this weekend when a Republican lawmaker pressed him over a controversial “fix” for Obamacare subsidies—one that could hand taxpayer-funded benefits to millionaires.

The dramatic exchange came as the government shutdown reached its 39th day, a standoff widely blamed on Schumer’s refusal to negotiate on key spending issues. During the tense confrontation, Schumer was approached by Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who questioned the Democratic leader’s hastily proposed plan to reopen the government by extending Affordable Care Act subsidies for another year.

Schumer appeared caught off guard. He admitted to Moreno that he didn’t have a written version of his proposal yet, saying, “We can’t give you a counter in writing, but it’s very simple. Because we have two sentences we would add to any proposal which would extend the ACA benefits for one year.”

But Moreno wasn’t convinced. The Ohio Republican pointed out that Schumer’s so-called “fix” contained no income caps, meaning even ultra-wealthy Americans could qualify for taxpayer-subsidized healthcare. “It does still have no income caps, so people who make $1, $2, $3 million a year,” Moreno said, before Schumer cut him off.
