New York’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, wasted no time stirring controversy just hours after claiming victory over Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Instead of celebrating, Mamdani took to social media with a message that many New Yorkers saw as tone-deaf — and even entitled.
A “Thank You” That Comes With a Bill
In a video posted to X, Mamdani thanked his supporters and praised his campaign’s “historic” win. But the feel-good message didn’t last long. The Democratic Socialist quickly shifted gears, urging “working-class” New Yorkers to start donating again — this time to help fund his transition team.
He told viewers that while he had previously asked supporters to stop sending campaign contributions, the new donations were now needed to “hire policy experts,” “strengthen infrastructure,” and “support the early stages” of his incoming administration.
