A federal judge appointed by Barack Obama just handed down a stunning order that could reshape the ongoing budget standoff in Washington. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge John McConnell blasted Justice Department lawyers and ordered the Trump administration to fully restore federal food stamp funding — known as SNAP — by Friday.
“The evidence shows that people will go hungry, food pantries will be overburdened and needless suffering will occur,” McConnell scolded during a tense hearing. “Last weekend, SNAP benefits lapsed for the first time in our nation’s history. This is a problem that could have and should have been avoided.”

The ruling came as the government shutdown — fueled by Senator Chuck Schumer’s standoff over spending — entered its 37th day. The budget impasse had pushed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to the brink of collapse, with federal funds beginning to run dry after November 1.
