New York’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, didn’t waste any time trading the city’s cold November streets for the tropical warmth of Puerto Rico. Just days after his election win, Mamdani joined Governor Kathy Hochul and other Democrat officials for the annual Somos conference — a political gathering that has long been criticized as a taxpayer-funded “working vacation” for New York’s elite.
While organizers claim the conference focuses on policies affecting Puerto Rico and Latino communities, the event has increasingly earned a reputation as a networking retreat where politicians sip cocktails, mingle with lobbyists, and plan their next campaign moves far from the public eye.
A “Working” Getaway in Paradise
Mamdani arrived in San Juan on Thursday, flying commercial with a smile and a soundbite. “I’m so happy to be here in Puerto Rico. And you know that question was asked of me of where I would go outside of the country, and I’m happy to be here at Somos,” he said, brushing off criticism of the trip.
