A small Kansas town has been rocked by scandal after state officials announced criminal charges against its mayor, who they claim voted in multiple elections despite not being a U.S. citizen.
Joe Ceballos, the mayor of Coldwater, Kansas, is accused of casting ballots in several recent elections while being a legal permanent resident from Mexico. The announcement came Wednesday from Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab and Attorney General Kris Kobach — both Republicans known for pushing election integrity reforms.
According to Kobach’s office, six criminal charges have been filed against Ceballos for allegedly voting unlawfully in elections held in 2022, 2023, and 2024. The case is being described as a major example of the type of voter fraud that conservatives have long warned is happening more often than many care to admit.
Ceballos previously served as a city councilman before becoming mayor of the small rural community. Now, he faces serious legal trouble that could result in more than five years behind bars if convicted.
