Authorities confirmed that the UPS cargo plane, carrying three crew members, crashed shortly after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Witnesses described hearing a deafening explosion followed by a towering plume of smoke as flames engulfed the surrounding area.
The Louisville Metropolitan Police Department said multiple agencies rushed to the crash site near Fern Valley and Grade Lane. Officials later confirmed that casualties have been confirmed, though details on the number of victims are still emerging.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called the situation “serious,” noting that emergency responders were battling a massive blaze that erupted after the crash. “We have every emergency agency responding to the scene. There are multiple injuries and the fire is still burning. There are many road closures in the area – please avoid the scene,” Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg stated in a social media post.
