Donald Trump just pulled off a Middle East maneuver that even his staunchest allies didn’t see coming. The former president—known for his “peace through strength” approach—is set to host Syria’s new leader at the White House, and the visitor’s past is raising every eyebrow in Washington.

A Former Terrorist Walks the Halls of Power

Ahmed al-Sharaa, once better known by his jihadi alias Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, will become the first Syrian head of state to visit Washington in more than eight decades. The announcement came from Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani during a weekend speech in Bahrain, confirming, “President Ahmed al-Sharaa will be at the White House at the start of November… the first visit by a Syrian president to the White House in more than 80 years.”

According to Axios, the historic meeting is scheduled for November 10 and will center on an agreement for Syria to join the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. For many, it’s an almost unbelievable twist—given that the same man once had a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head.
