And yet, the Chicago Police Department is down nearly 1,000 officers and facing $98 million in new budget cuts.
“They are tired of supporting illegal aliens and they are tired of hearing their politicians demonize law enforcement and ignore their needs,” Smith said.
Democrats Choose Illegal Aliens Over Public Safety
Across the nation, Democrat mayors are following the same playbook — slashing police funding while handing out taxpayer-funded benefits to people who broke U.S. law to get here.
In December 2024, one frustrated Chicago resident told the City Council exactly what millions of Americans are thinking:
“I got a great way what we can do with this budget. First, let’s start with cutting off illegals getting free everything, free housing, free schooling, free food. Yeah, let’s start with that. That’ll save us a lot of money.”
But officials like Mayor Brandon Johnson aren’t listening. Instead, they keep virtue signaling about “welcoming cities” while neighborhoods descend into chaos and police officers head for the exits.
Chicago’s ongoing staffing crisis isn’t some mystery. Cops are leaving for communities that respect them — while the city’s leadership continues to cut resources and shower illegal immigrants with cash.
Trump Administration Restores Law and Order
When President Trump returned to office, he made it clear that restoring law enforcement and securing America’s borders were top priorities.
The administration has reactivated and expanded the 287(g) program, which allows local police to work directly with federal immigration authorities. Under Trump’s direction, the Department of Homeland Security was ordered to use the program “to the maximum extent permitted by law.”
The initiative gives police three cooperation models with ICE — from screening arrested individuals to full-on investigative authority.
Predictably, blue city leaders are revolting. Police departments in Minneapolis, Omaha, and Grand Prairie have all refused to participate, and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has tried to walk back ICE cooperation after losing control of her city’s crime crisis.
Trump, however, isn’t backing down — even threatening to federalize D.C.’s police again if Bowser doesn’t comply.
Cops Deserve Better — America Deserves Better
Sergeant Smith says the solution is simple: stop funding chaos and start investing in cops.
“The billions being spent on illegal aliens should be redirected toward police training and recruitment,” she said. “Our government system was not designed to be able to support millions of people from other countries, especially at a time when we have so many people who are citizens of the United States and are really in need of assistance.”
The National Police Association reports that nine out of ten departments nationwide are suffering from critical staffing shortages. The “defund the police” movement didn’t just weaken departments — it broke morale and drove good officers away.
Now, those same blue cities are begging for help as violent crime spikes and recruitment dries up.
Democrat mayors have a choice: keep pandering to illegal immigrants or start standing with the law enforcement officers who protect their cities.
But for many cops, that choice has already been made. They’re walking away — trading broken blue cities for places that still believe in law, order, and respect for the badge.
