North Carolina politics was rocked this week after Democrat state Rep. Cecil Brockman officially resigned from office following his shocking arrest on multiple child sex charges. The 41-year-old lawmaker’s fall from grace has stunned both parties and ignited outrage across the state.
Brockman, who represented Guilford County, was charged in October with two counts of statutory sexual offense with a minor and two counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. The once-powerful Democrat is now being held without bond at the High Point Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
According to court filings, the alleged crimes involved a 15-year-old victim and reportedly occurred on August 15. Authorities say Brockman’s actions and his attempts to use his political influence have made the case especially disturbing.
A magistrate’s order denying him bond stated that Brockman’s legislative status provides him with “abundant resources to aid in his flight from prosecution.” The order also accused the disgraced Democrat of trying to contact the alleged victim, even going so far as to allegedly use his title to gain access to the juvenile in a hospital.
