President Donald Trump is once again stepping up to protect struggling American families — this time over the looming expiration of food assistance benefits. On Friday, Trump announced that he is prepared to move forward with funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) if provided with the “appropriate legal direction,” following a federal judge’s order that pushed officials to use emergency funds to keep the program alive.
The move comes as SNAP benefits are set to run out on Saturday, threatening millions of families as the government shutdown drags into another week. Until now, Trump administration lawyers have maintained that without explicit authorization, tapping the emergency fund could violate federal law.
“Our Government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available, and now two Courts have issued conflicting opinions on what we can and cannot do,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The former president made it clear he’s not willing to let Americans suffer because of partisan gridlock. “I do NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT,” Trump continued. “Therefore, I have instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible.”
