Professional athletes live lives most Americans only dream of — luxury cars, massive contracts, private jets. But behind the highlight reels and endorsement deals lies a financial nightmare that would make any taxpayer sick.

The “Jock Tax” Trap That Follows Athletes Everywhere
Most people only have to file taxes in the state where they live and work. But for professional athletes, that’s not the case. They face what experts call the “jock tax,” a punishing and complicated web of state income taxes that hits them in every city they play.
“Take, [for] example, a professional baseball player. How many cities does that baseball player play in? They will owe a tax return, sometimes, in ten to 15 states. So, it can be a little bit onerous,” explained tax attorney Rich Hofmann.
That’s not an exaggeration. A single Major League Baseball player could end up filing as many as 15 different state tax returns each year — and he’s not alone. Trainers, equipment managers, scouts, and other support staff who travel with teams also get crushed by the same insane system.
