CNBC’s Squawk Box erupted Monday morning when co-anchor Becky Quick grilled House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) over his party’s role in extending the government shutdown — while still demanding over a trillion dollars in new spending. That spending, as Quick pointed out, would even include taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants.
Jeffries appeared stunned as Quick confronted him on live television, calling out Democrats for hypocrisy. “What you’re asking the Republicans to do right now when they control the White House, the Senate and the House is effectively what the Democrats could not do when they controlled all three heads of government themselves,” Quick said sharply.
Her challenge hit home. Quick reminded Jeffries that Democrats had already had their chance to extend expiring Obamacare subsidies but failed to deliver. “The three-year setup for the expiration of these credits was intentionally put in. It was put in when you controlled the White House, the House and the Senate. You couldn’t get it passed for longer,” she pressed.
Then came the knockout punch. “This is a setup kind of your own creation that you all couldn’t extend beyond that. Now you want the Republicans to do something you didn’t do when you were in power?” Quick asked.
