During a tense interview on ABC’s This Week, Arizona Democrat Senator Mark Kelly raised eyebrows across the nation when he appeared to threaten U.S. service members with potential prosecution for following President Donald Trump’s military orders. The remarks have sparked outrage from conservatives, veterans, and even fellow lawmakers who see his words as dangerously close to encouraging insubordination in the ranks.
Speaking with host Martha Raddatz, Kelly criticized the Trump administration’s authorization of strikes against suspected drug smuggling boats in the Caribbean. When asked whether the missions were legal, Kelly implied they were not — and took it a step further by warning that young troops could face criminal jeopardy for carrying out the orders.
“It’s questionable,” Kelly told Raddatz. “And the White House and the Department of Defense could not give us a logical explanation on how this is legal. They were tying themselves in knots trying to explain this. We had a lot of questions for them, both Democrats and Republicans. It was not a good meeting. It did not go well.”
