The Iowa Democratic Party is reeling after one of its rising stars abruptly ended her Senate campaign amid a firestorm over her defense of an illegal alien superintendent accused of fleeing from police.
Jackie Norris, chair of the Des Moines Public School Board (DMPS) and former chief of staff to Michelle Obama, suspended her U.S. Senate bid this week after publicly backing Ian Andre Roberts — an illegal immigrant from Guyana who somehow rose to become superintendent of the largest school district in Iowa.
Illegal Immigrant Superintendent Arrested After Wild Police Chase
The controversy erupted when Roberts was dramatically arrested last month after allegedly fleeing from immigration agents who had identified themselves.
According to federal officials, Roberts — who once competed as an Olympic athlete — took off in his car before ditching it on the side of the road. With the help of the Iowa State Patrol and a K9 unit, agents reportedly found him hiding in a wooded area just a few hundred yards away.
A search of the vehicle turned up a loaded handgun, a fixed-blade knife, and $3,000 in cash — a discovery that left many Iowans wondering why a public school superintendent was armed and carrying large sums of money while under a federal deportation order.
