What started as another miserable Monday rush hour in Sacramento turned into a scene that can only be described as miraculous. Traffic on eastbound Highway 50 came to a standstill after a medical helicopter slammed down in the middle of the freeway — but what happened next proved that the American spirit of courage and community is still very much alive.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, commuters noticed something alarming in the sky. A REACH Air Medical helicopter, returning to base after dropping off a patient at a Sacramento hospital, suddenly began losing altitude.
“People reported that they basically saw the helicopter kind of going down quickly. So all the traffic slowed down,” Sylvia said.
Moments later, the aircraft came crashing down right in the center of eastbound Highway 50, surrounded by startled drivers who had slowed their vehicles to watch the emergency unfold. It could have easily been a catastrophic mass-casualty disaster. Instead, what followed defied all odds.
