A peaceful Sunday morning in Grand Blanc, Michigan, was shattered by violence after a man stormed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, opening fire on churchgoers and setting the building ablaze in a shocking attack.
Early reports coming out immediately after the chaos were sketchy at best. Local outlets initially stated that as many as 6-8 victims had been rushed to the hospital. Later, law enforcement confirmed one person tragically lost their life, while eight others were hospitalized with injuries from the assault. As if the gunfire wasn’t enough, flames quickly engulfed the church, prompting a massive four-alarm emergency response.
At a press conference just hours after the tragedy, Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye gave the first official details about the suspect. While he didn’t immediately release the attacker’s name, Renye confirmed the gunman was “a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan,” a small city just outside Grand Blanc, about an hour north of Detroit.
