The case of a missing Florida teenager took a dramatic turn Friday after authorities walked back earlier claims that he was abducted in broad daylight by a group of Hispanic men.
Seventeen-year-old Caden Rex Speight remains missing, but the story surrounding his disappearance has shifted in a way that has many scratching their heads.
Initial Panic Over Possible Abduction
Early reports set off alarm bells when witnesses claimed Speight had been snatched from his car by four Hispanic men. The image of his red “Make America Great Again” hat left behind in the vehicle made the story go viral almost instantly, fueling speculation about whether politics was a motive.
Authorities now say those early assumptions were wrong.
Sheriff’s Office Pushes Back
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office released a blunt statement shutting down both claims.
