President Trump was in New York for a major speech before the United Nations General Assembly, marking his return to the global stage. He and First Lady Melania arrived around 8:50 a.m. to a tightly secured venue, as expected for any U.S. president.
But what happened next shocked both the press and the Secret Service.

According to witnesses, two escalators were positioned side by side leading to the next floor. Melania Trump stepped onto the escalator on the left first, followed closely by President Trump. The moment he stepped on, the entire escalator jolted to a stop — while the escalator on the right kept moving as normal.
The First Lady quickly adapted, beginning to walk up the halted escalator steps with the President following close behind. Members of the President’s team and the Secret Service moved in immediately as the situation unfolded in front of dozens of people.
It didn’t take long for security experts to raise red flags about what had just happened. RealClearPolitics reporter Susan Crabtree cited concerns from within the Secret Service itself.
“Sources in the Secret Service community are very concerned about what they witnessed from fellow agents today when President Trump was stalled and vulnerable. It’s a similar critique to the Secret Service’s delayed response in getting Trump off stage after a bullet grazed his ear on July 13,” Crabtree reported.

The White House confirmed that the Secret Service has already launched an investigation into the incident. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made clear that the administration will not tolerate any potential lapse — or sabotage — when it comes to protecting the President and First Lady.
“If we find that these were UN staffers who were purposefully trying to trip up President Trump and FLOTUS well, there better be accountability for those people,” Leavitt said.
