Baseball can be cruel. One moment you’re a hero on the highlight reels, the next you’re walking off the field wondering how it all slipped away. That’s exactly what happened to San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. on Saturday night.
A Defensive Gem That Had Petco Park Rocking
With the Padres trailing the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 in the fourth inning, catcher Tyler Stephenson stepped up to the plate with a runner aboard. He crushed a Michael King pitch toward the right-field wall.
Tatis turned on the jets, tracking the soaring ball as fans rose from their seats. With perfect timing, he leaped at the wall and stole a sure home run from Stephenson. Petco Park erupted.
The Padres outfielder even nearly doubled off the runner with a rocket throw, flashing the athleticism that has made him one of the most electrifying players in the league.
Stephenson himself couldn’t deny what he had just witnessed. “He made a hell of a play and he’s a hell of an athlete,” the Reds catcher admitted afterward.
