Charlotte, North Carolina, is facing mounting criticism after the horrific murder of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on the city’s public transit system. The brutal attack, which unfolded on August 22 aboard the Lynx Blue Line light rail, has sparked outrage nationwide and renewed calls from Trump administration officials for a crackdown on crime in Democrat-led cities.
Police say 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. stabbed Zarutska to death in what authorities described as a senseless act of violence. Brown, who has a lengthy criminal record, was charged with first-degree murder.
What ignited even greater fury was the release of surveillance footage days later. The graphic video spread rapidly online, showing the horrifying moment Zarutska was attacked shortly before 10 p.m. Many viewers were stunned this tragedy could happen in broad daylight—or rather, on public transportation funded by federal tax dollars.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the seriousness of the investigation, posting on X:
“The FBI has been investigating the Charlotte train murder from day one. Stay tuned.”
