In what officials are calling one of the most calculated political assassinations in recent U.S. history, 57-year-old Vance Boelter has been arrested after a brutal double murder that left two Minnesota Democrats dead and two others wounded. The horrifying crime has sent shockwaves through the state—and the nation—raising urgent questions about politically motivated violence, security for elected officials, and the rise of radical anti-government groups.
Boelter, apprehended Sunday evening in Sibley County, was the subject of a massive manhunt involving more than 20 SWAT units, helicopters, and law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions. Authorities say Boelter was the man behind a coordinated assault that claimed the lives of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and seriously injured State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.
“This was the largest manhunt in the state’s history,” Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley told reporters at a press conference, as dozens of officers stood silently behind him.
