Even though President Biden’s State of the Union Address had humorous moments and audacious policy recommendations, viewership eventually lagged.
The audience for Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech dropped sharply by 29 percent, demonstrating that Americans were less interested in his speech than in those of previous presidents.

According to a report from Deadline on the not quite unexpected ratings decline for Brandon’s State of the Union speech,
Over 27 million people watched President Biden’s State of the Union speech, which is a significant drop from prior years’ ratings. This spotlighted nationwide shift in attention reflects growing optimism after months of dealing with unprecedented challenges and underscores Americans’ expanded perspectives on what is important for our nation.
According to Nielsen statistics, President Biden’s speech to Congress in 2021 attracted 26.9 million viewers, the fewest people to see a State of the Union address in thirty years. Given that it wasn’t officially a SOTU event and since he had only been president for two months, this is very notable.
The 16 TV networks tracked by Nielsen ratings received an astonishing 38.2 million viewers in the previous year, marking a significant success for network programming.
A variety of surprising revelations were revealed throughout the address on a variety of TV channels, including cable news sources like Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and CNN as well as broadcast networks.
The crowd for Joe Biden’s speech was mostly elderly, with roughly 75 percent of attendees being 55 or older. Republicans should be grateful for this fact as Democrats mainly depend on young votes. Only 5% of Democrats were between the ages of 18 and 34, and 19% were between the ages of 35 and 54. This might become a problem in the 2024 election if such low participation among key Democratic demographics continues.
The channel on which people viewed the speech was also fascinating. As reported by Deadline, “Fox News drew the largest audience, with 4.57 million total viewers, followed by ABC with 4.27 million, NBC with 3.68 million, CBS with 3.52 million, MSNBC with 3.46 million, CNN at 2.13 million and Fox Broadcasting with 1.6 million.”
On a rare occasion, viewers showed their left-leaning political views by tuning in to CNN and MSNBC more often than Fox News Channel. These findings show that viewers throughout America are adopting a progressive outlook at an increasing rate.
It’s noteworthy to note that although Democratic Americans listened to the president’s State of the Union speech, Republicans were less interested and mostly chose to abstain. This demonstrates that when it comes to political speech, younger generations are more inclined to stray from established party lines.
The depiction of younger demographics may be skewed by the ratings statistics, which may not take into account viewers who favor streaming services. This might be the cause of the decline in cable-based viewing as it seems that this generation prefers to access content whenever they want and without any obligations.
It seems that a move to streaming services may be to blame for the sharp decline in TV viewing. About 30% of reductions may have been missed by leaving these subscription platforms out of the data collection, indicating that viewers are switching to digital choices rather than conventional cable or broadcast channels.
